Ruby, Pyrope & Muscovite

Posted April 19, 2019
Ruby with striations, etched lines and dots.

Order HQ Print.
Minerals: Ruby (Corundum), Pyrope (Garnet var. Rhodolite), Muscovite.
– Field of View: 1.5 cm (appr.)
– Found: Madagascar (Zazafotsy)
Photo: Leo Jahaan

This Ruby has particularly interesting natural etching with lines and dots almost looking like a code of sorts.  It is surrounded by patches of red Pyrope on a dark Muscovite matrix.

The locality of Zazafotsy in Madagascar produces fascinating bi-color rubies, which change from a reddish-pink to a rich violet color depending on the source of light (sun / artificial) and angle of viewing. In the photo below you can see the same ruby with a very different color.

The violet Ruby from the previous photo is now pink.
